Building a Mosque at NY’s Ground Zero?

16 May

Have you heard the news?

Here’s the latest on this story from the New York Post:

Mosque Madness at Ground Zero by Andrea Peyser

A mosque rises over Ground Zero. And fed-up New Yorkers are crying, “No!”

A chorus of critics — from neighbors to those who lost loved ones on 9/11 to me — feel as if they’ve received a swift kick in the teeth.

Plans are under way for a Muslim house of worship, topped by a 13-story cultural center with a swimming pool, in a building damaged by the fuselage of a jet flown by extremists into the World Trade Center.

The opening date shall live in infamy: Sept. 11, 2011. The 10th anniversary of the day a hole was punched in the city’s heart.

The story continues …

Paul Sipos, member of Community Board 1, said a mosque is a fine idea — someplace else.

“If the Japanese decided to open a cultural center across from Pearl Harbor, that would be insensitive,” Sipos told me. “If the Germans opened a Bach choral society across from Auschwitz, even after all these years, that would be an insensitive setting. I have absolutely nothing against Islam. I just think: Why there?”

Why, indeed.

I’m curious to know how westcoastwitness.com readers feel about this – please share your opinion.

I’m personally inclined to say this is more than a little bit insensitive – especially their beginning construction on September 11.

Inappropriate.

In other news – I apologize for the lack of updates this week. My family has been plagued with a stomach virus. Hopefully we’ll all be better soon.

Blessings to you, and thank you for reading.

I can understand why people would be upset, but I think those planning to build it are well-intentioned. Firstly, the building is a community center, not just a mosque, and it’s not going to be on the actual ground zero property but rather 2 blocks away. Muslims want it there because they want to fight off prejudice and show themselves as peaceful people, as people who oppose terrorists and who, as American citizens themselves, long just as heartily to protect Americans as non-Muslims do. Also, 300 Muslims were killed in the Sept 11 attacks. They represent a large religious minority in this country and I think they have every right to build it, especially since they plan to do so in order to ease cultural and religious tensions.

I think Paul Sipos nailed it. Why at that place? Beginnng construction on that date?

Hopefully this will not happen, but if it does, God is and will still be in control.

    Blessings!

i haven’t read the article, but my initial reactions are:

    - that’s a little ridiculous.
    - they’ll never be allowed to go through with it.

I think its a great idea, people need muslims to interact with us.Its better to blend with us then against us and this way we get to understand on a better level.

Bare in mind only the radical looneys get the lime light. Many people were killed including muslims and to say you appose to a mosque because they are muslims is a racially provoked reaction.

Anyway, its a community center for all.

Here’s our take on it from the sunny island of Barbados…

Time for a little Tolerance Reciprocity by the Muslims

The proponents of the 9/11 Mosque say that allowing its construction will show the tolerance of Americans.

Okay, I’m all for tolerance – so here’s my offer…

If the Muslims want to build a mosque at Ground Zero, no problem. I’ll even donate time and money to make it happen…

…Just as soon as the first Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist and Mormon places of worship are built in Mecca.

I was thinking the same thing, then I read your post. The example I was gonna use was that they could do that right after they open up the dome on the rock so the Jews can visit more of the remains of the temple Solomon built than just the wailing wall. If tolerance is the goal, then let’s see everyone be tolerant.

    Will Americans submit?

Recent history has shown that if you draw a picture of Mohammad or otherwise “insult” Islam, you’ll have no shortage of offended Muslims lining up for an opportunity to stab you in the heart, behead you, rape your daughter or burn your house… so you’ll have to forgive my tongue-in-cheek “confusion” that sensitive Muslims everywhere don’t realise how offensive it is to build a huge mosque on the holy ground surrounding what was the World Trade Centre.

The joke is, of course, that the people planning to build the 9/11 Mosque at Ground Zero know exactly how offensive it will be.

That’s the idea. That’s why they want to hold the grand opening on the tenth anniversary of the slaughter of 9/11.

The proponents know that the building won’t be seen by the Islamist fascists as a mere mosque: it will be a victory monument. A symbol of American submission. A vision of the progress of the worldwide Muslim Caliphate that is the Jihadist goal.

i think the people need to understand when they say there will be a mosque that will be for american muslimm and they have a right to get a mosque any where in america nothing is wrong whit that, don,t think that this will be indian mosque, or pakistani mosque,or saudi mosque,it will be american mosque for american muslims,so that will be ok

  9. falcon May 17, 2010 at 11:11 am #

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING????????? What idiot gave the go ahead for this build? Why not just hand out shotguns and nooses? I have absolutely nothing against the Muslim religion or people, but For God’s sake You think the California riots were bad? Wait until the people affected by 9/11, the survivors, family and New Yorkers have to see the muslim symbol standing where some of the bodies STILL rest. I am sorry and I mean no offense but it was Muslims that did the deed and now you want to put a muslim church ON ground zero? Let me see if I can think of enough words here…idiot, morons, fools, stupid, ignorant..thats all the clean ones I can think of. AMERICA STAND UP AND FIGHT THIS IDIOTIC DECISION. The other countries that lost people in that attack STAND UP AND SAY NO. NO ONE should build on Ground zero, it should be turned into a memorial so NO ONE FORGETS.

Just remember Oklahoma bombing, that was a bomb place next to a kindergarten place, but white people are allowed to build around it. Remember you planted that bomb. Religion in the hands of morons has the same result!

  11. LP May 17, 2010 at 11:48 am #

That’s more than ridiculous. Who are these Muslims that keep wanting to show us how their religion is peace loving? I’ve been to countries where Islam is the only religion allowed – not a chance of building a Chrisitian Church there! I don’t think race or colour matters now to most people, but having other folks religion’s in dominant Christian countries is asking for trouble. Muslims will not be happy until all the world is subjected to their fanatical beliefs. I want to see the ‘right thinking’ Muslims preach to their youngsters – ‘You will not have virgins waiting for you in Heaven’ ‘It is against Allah’s will for you to murder other human beings’
Before I forget – where were the Muslims thanking the British soldiers who rescued/protected thousands of Muslims in Kosova? Answer: Nowhere to be seen!

We as Americans must speak up now without delay. The comments above are correct. There is no tolerance on their side but it is demanded from everyone else in the world. Enough is enough. Everyone must write their congressmen, and senators to protest this insult to us. I believe in freedom of religion but I am insulted that our government would be so insensitive to the American people. Of course, it is always the US giving and never receiving……and I don’t just mean money. I also mean compassion.

Build a mosque near ground zero, why of cours, lets build it on ground zero…….. why must we constantly prove ourselves? we did not attack ourselves on that awful day, I think they who desire to build such, should say not here not near ground zero this is to sensitive, then I alone would think different about the Muslium World…..

  14. Cynthia Harris Jan May 26, 2010 at 11:51 am #

  17. educlaytion June 4, 2010 at 2:42 pm #

Interesting piece. I just wrote about this mosque and have been trying to figure out what the average person thinks about this controversy and groundbreaking on Sept. 11 2011! I’d love to hear more of your thoughts.

    • WesWoodell June 4, 2010 at 3:20 pm #

Hi Clay. This “regular dude” is not a fan of this idea … not at all

Of course it’s their “right” to build a mosque at that location the same as it’s the Westboro Baptist Church’s “right” to do what they do, but just because something is a “right” doesn’t make it right.

What makes it worse is their decision to begin construction on September 11 – that’s like a slap in the face. A passive aggressive “yeah, we got you good, didn’t we!” kind of gesture.

If this goes through, it will breed more conflict and likely lead to more violence … only this time it may be against the Muslims. Too many people lost loved ones, and when emotions are running high bad things tend to happen.

  18. robert elsten July 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm #

i think thise is crazey we need to think of the famleys that there members that lost there lives to those muslems and what kind of govertment we have to let this to go on we the people must take back or govertment

  19. Theresa September 13, 2010 at 5:04 am #

WOW! Ihave to agree with almost everyone on this building near ground zero. No faith base buildings should be built on ground zero. Period! The only thing that should be on ground zero is the names of the victims who lost their lives that day. my thoughts are it is time for us to take back our country and get rid of these stupdid laws that over ride our founding fathers laws. If they build we should tear it down or fly a plane in the middle of it right when alot of people are there, just like they did us. Bin said he did this because we killed his people, so he killed us. bull! this has been the plan all along. For America to be of one faith. Us women to be under their laws. I say no to any mosque being built within 10 blocks of ground Zero. By the way who owns the ground around that area? Does the city of NY? if that is so, cant the city say no? or is it privately own. Thats where it starts. Find out who owns the property and go from there.

  20. Heather September 14, 2010 at 11:46 am #

I understand the fact that Muslims were killed in the attack on the World Trade Centers, but to even think about building a mosque that close to ground zero makes be so angry that I cannot even being to explain it. I mean really has anyone who is taking part in the building process stopped and asked all those who lost loved ones in this attack how they feel about this, and for the suspected date that it will be open to public to be on the tenth anniversary of the attack is bs. And for government officials to say that if they don’t allow this they fear another attack like 9/11 or worse is telling the rest of the world that we are cowards and don’t want to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves because they were murdered on 9/11
