Aggravated again at SFSU – we can’t get in!

22 Oct

So SFSU is accepting applications again.

Regular readers already know they didn’t accept Airiel or me for Spring semester 2010  because of the California state budget crisis (I wrote a post about that here). Regular readers also know my wife and I have been sent to San Francisco, CA, to plant a campus ministry through the Lake Merced Church of Christ serving San Francisco State University.

We’ve been patiently waiting to apply for Fall 2010 classes this month, and attempted to do so this morning only to read this (from the SFSU admissions site):

Lower Division

Freshman and sophomore students who have completed fewer than 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units) are considered lower-division transfer students. SF State is not accepting applications from lower division transfer students.

Upper Division

Junior and senior students who have completed 60 or more transferable semester units (90 quarter units) are considered upper-division transfer students.

Second Baccalaureates

Second Baccalaureate students are those who earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning and are seeking another baccalaureate degree. SF State is not currently accepting applications from second baccalaureate students.

Guess which categories Airiel and I fall in to.

Yep, she’s a lower division transfer student, and I was planning to apply for my second baccalaureate degree. For people falling into those two categories, “SF State is not currently accepting applications …”

Gah!!!

Get this: they won’t even allow us to audit courses … the classes are too full!

They do have a program called Open University that could allow us to take a couple of courses for credit, but those classes are very expensive and many are upper division (meaning we wouldn’t have contact with younger students or people new to the area).

It looks like between the two of us I may be the only one able to officially get in, and the only way to do so would be to apply for a post-graduate degree program.

So much for mine and Airiel’s dream of taking whatever classes we’d like whenever we’d like. She was really looking forward to hanging out with the theater students, and I was really looking forward to sinking my teeth into a few lower-level philosophy and world religion courses (lots of interaction and discussion in classes like that).

We must spend time with students, and nothing would validate our presence on campus better than being in classes with them. I’m confident we’ll get around this somehow, but this budget thing is definately a bump in the road.
